Sand Becomes Land
Maasvlakte 2 is a construction program to expand the haven of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Large amounts of sand and stone are being put on to create new land for industrial complexes to stand on. At some point, these new complexes are meant to keep up with the ever rising demand. Such an invasion of nature raises questions of environmental protection and pollution which are supposed to be kept to a minimum by working with Dutch and European stipulations and selection of companies who wish to establish themselves there.
Sand becomes land work focuses on the way the artificially created land clashes with nature. In this manufactured world even nature, which is supposed to be wild and chaotic is carefully planned out. In those places where it has not been considered yet, it manages to fill up the vast and empty space on its own.
