HYPERCHROMA (excesive pigmentation)
Hyperchroma is a series in which I set out to the streets in order to study the inalienable relationship of color and form reacting in the spectrum of natural light, and how shadows expressed themselves punctuating the image, providing a sort of internal montage to a single frame, assembling a “fiction”.
This story, or “fiction” is told through the exploration of graphic, colourful thrusts, yet nonetheless maintain a psychedelic, even dark, air, tinged with a nagging incomprehensibility. The works presented in “Hyperchroma” all belong to the same mythology, the aesthetic explorations paralleling my own forays into the street’s own brew, but in this series become decontextualized and juxtaposed along new lines. In this way, rather than creating a prepackaged world to be consumed, the photographs intend to create a surreal atmosphere in need of translation, into which the viewer is plunged. The metaphor that springs to mind with this artistic approach is that of the rebus, but perhaps a more accurate comparison would be to a Rubik´s cube – a series of apparently disparate elements that come together with a bit of disentangling; an impression that crystallizes only through viewer participation.
Along the way I was faced with an incontrovertible truth: conflict and pressure exist deeply rooted in the realm of the streets, and this delivered a new internal rhythm to the image, a new configuration of this Rubik’s cube: The sense of unease, always provided by reality, igniting itself within the boundaries of the frame, reminding us of the accidental and terrifying beauty we’re all immersed in.
Hyperchroma is the search to arrest color with the camera, as a means to protect and rearrange it in an increasingly bleaching world.
